DR. TYFAHRA SINGLETON | EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Tyfahra attended Oberlin College and after receiving her bachelor’s degree, worked in corporate sales for a few years before entering the graduate program in Comparative Literature at University of California, Berkeley. While at Cal, Tyfahra discovered her love of teaching as an award-winning instructor and lecturer in undergraduate literature and composition courses for eight years.
Her interest in new school designs, charter schools and education reform led her to GO Public Schools (GO), a community nonprofit that advocates for K-12 systems change to promote excellence and equity for Oakland students, where she was Director of Data and Operations. At GO, Tyfahra designed a database to support parent organizers and worked on school board campaigns, among other initiatives. She then moved to Civicorps, a charter high school that combines academics with job training and career pathways, particularly in conservation-related fields. As Head of School and Director of Education, Tyfahra led a team of educators with a focus on increasing the rigor of instruction and alignment with grade-level standards, and had the honor of working with powerful, resilient young adults who returned to school to earn their diploma.
At Camp Phoenix, Tyfahra manages the organizational strategy, secures resources for our programs, and works to ensure that every camper has a transformative experience that sets them on a path toward their best self in a world that might not always see it.
Tyfahra lives in Oakland with her partner Chris and three children: their daughter Lula, aged 3, and their two boys Eli and Leo ages 12 and 10. They like to make music, cook, do crafts, and go camping.
